John Digweed, Live In Toronto review

John Digweed, Live In Toronto
Live In Toronto is (once again!) another great mix compilation from DJ +John Digweed. 3 discs of the best house and techno, being played by the legendary DJ from Hastings. Yes, it's a really good mix.

All of the tunes on here, are of high quality, but one really stands out. More on that later, let's start at the beginning.

Mixes covering 3 plus discs, often start slowly, with disc 1 being the mellowest of the collection, but Live In Toronto, disc 1, isn't like that. It's not your full on bangin' set of tunes, but it's not laid back either. Guy J's Once In A Blue Moon is really infectious as the melody weaves its magic, mixing seamlessly into Thodoris Triantafillou & CJ Jeff's - Verona.

But the best tune on disc 1 is by far Adnon Olivier's Casa Bulga. We first heard this tune on a Digweed mix (entitled Live In Beirut) in 2004. What makes it so good is the hypnotic chant. It's sooo good.

Disc 2, goes a bit more uptempo, from disc 1, opening with the awesome The Sun, by Sunshine Jones. This second disc is a great follow on from disc 1, as it builds a more darksome vibe, while still delivering some really tuneful moments: Livio & Roby - Ananda and Azimute's Where Is The Magic.

Disc 3, is the "clubbiest" of the three discs and it makes this clear from the start, with Quivver - Paper Lunch followed by the superb Christian Pommer remix of B'utizas - Baphuma Ezulwini. But our favourite tune of disc 3 is Adam Beyer's People Understand. The end of this great mix is a good way to finish, with Dem Howl's Audion.

But what is the best tune of the compliation?

That's really easy this time, it is (of course) Adnon Olivier's Casa Bulga. We first heard it 10 years ago and it really grabbed us, so that we kept playing that one tune in the Beirut mix, again and again and... So to hear it again now, alongside newer music, just shows how good it is, to still sound fresh and up to date.

Overall, Live In Toronto is (yet again) a really really good mix and John Digweed, just keeps the quality so high. We really think that 2014 has been a good year for dance music and Digweed's Live In series is a highlight of the year once more.
